Choosing a forex broker in Kenya

Rather than a ranked list that goes stale, here is how to evaluate any broker yourself — including the checks most comparison sites skip because they are paid per referral.

Start with the licence

The Capital Markets Authority publishes a register of licensed online forex brokers in Kenya. Check the register directly. A broker claiming regulation on its homepage is not evidence; the regulator's own list is.

Some brokers serving Kenyan clients are licensed elsewhere instead — in the UK, Australia, Cyprus or the Seychelles. Offshore licences vary enormously in how much protection they actually offer. A licence from a jurisdiction with no meaningful enforcement is close to decoration.

Then check you can get your money out

Depositing is effortless at every broker on earth. Withdrawing is where the differences appear. Search specifically for recent withdrawal complaints, and look at how the broker responds to them rather than whether they exist.

For Kenyan traders, M-Pesa support on the withdrawal side matters more than on the deposit side. Check the fees and the typical clearing time, and confirm there is no minimum withdrawal that traps small balances.

Compare the real cost of trading

A headline 'zero spread' account almost always charges commission instead. Compare total round-trip cost, not one number in isolation.

  • Spread on the pairs you will actually trade, during the hours you will trade them.
  • Commission per lot, if the account type charges one.
  • Overnight swap or holding fees on positions kept past the daily rollover.
  • Inactivity fees, which quietly drain dormant accounts.
  • Deposit and withdrawal charges, including the currency conversion spread.

Platform and automation support

If you intend to automate, this decides everything. MetaTrader 4 and 5 support Expert Advisors; Deriv offers an official API for building bots directly. A broker with only a proprietary web platform and no API cannot be automated at all.

Check whether the demo account has the same instruments and the same execution as the live one. A demo that behaves differently teaches you the wrong lessons.

Warning signs worth walking away from

  • Any guaranteed return, or an account manager who will trade for you.
  • Bonuses with conditions that lock your own deposit until you trade a volume target.
  • Pressure to deposit more after a loss.
  • No verifiable licence, or a licence number that does not appear on the regulator's register.
  • Withdrawal requests that trigger sudden requests for more documents.

Common questions

Which forex brokers are licensed in Kenya?

The Capital Markets Authority maintains the authoritative list on its own website. Because licences are granted and revoked over time, check the register at the point you are opening an account rather than relying on any third-party list.

Can I use an international broker from Kenya?

Many Kenyan traders do. The trade-off is that if something goes wrong, your recourse is with a regulator in another country, which is slower and harder. Weigh that against whatever the offshore broker offers that a local one does not.

Do forex brokers in Kenya accept M-Pesa?

Many do, for both deposits and withdrawals. Confirm the withdrawal fees and timings before depositing, since these vary more than the deposit side.
